Kryten, is a service mechanoid, who the guys rescued from his crashed vessel the Nova 5. Because he is programed to serve Kryten continues caring for the crew even after they have died. The Lister and the boys bring him to the dwarf to start a new life. Lister tries to break him from his servant programing for him to be his own boss and "Stop being everyone's smeggin' doormat." Kryten gets bored on the Dwarf fast and Rimmer puts him to work.
KRYTEN peels potatoes, irons, looks at a long list, scrubbs the decks, looks at the list, polishes the scutters, looks at the list, cleans Holly's screen and cleans Listers room. Throwing away his pet mold "Albert".
Kryten addresses everone as "Mister" He calls Lister "Mister David", Rimmer "Mister Arnold". Lister gets mad at Kryten calling Rimmer "Mister Arnold" and tells him "Mister Arnold" isn't his name. His name's "Rimmer." Or "Smeghead." Or "Dinosaur Breath" or "Molecule Mind." And on a really special occasion when you want to be really mega-polite to him, Kryten, we're talking MEGA-polite, in those exceptional circumstances, you can call him "Arse-hole."
Kryten, decides to rebel against Rimmer and paints Rimmer sitting on a toilet with his pants down. Then he tells Rimmer off Hi-fives Cat and takes off on Listers bike. Dressed in a metal-studded, leather jacket, cap, and gloves, climbs onto Lister's space-bike, sticks out his jaw defiantly, and revs the motor and leaves the Dwarf.
Later on in the series he is found in pieces after Listers space bike crashed into an asteroid. And Lister rebuilds him.
Kryten's original actor, David Ross, wasn't available to commit to a
series when Grant Naylor decided to make Kryten a continuing character, so he
was replaced by Robert Llewellyn. (Ross later returned in "White Hole" as
the new voice of Talkie Toaster.)
